Eden Gardens is a purpose-built long term care home in the Northfield/Bowen area of Nanaimo, British Columbia, housing 130 seniors. It is a non-profit home and the only one in the Central Island focused entirely on dementia care. Care & support

Residents receive 24-hour nursing care and support from an interdisciplinary team, using a person-centred approach that focuses on dignity, comfort and quality of life.

Care services include nursing and personal care support, access to physicians and nurse practitioners, pharmacy services, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and support for complex care needs related to dementia.

Eden Gardens also manages two adult day programs for people with dementia who live at home, Daybreak and Stepping Stones, which run Monday to Friday, and a community bathing program.

The home has 130 private rooms, each with an accessible washroom, within small neighbourhood-style living areas.

As a publicly funded long term care home, accommodation costs are set by Island Health under provincial guidelines and are based on income. Admissions are managed by Island Health through a case manager.

Everyday life

The home has 24-hour on-site staffing, 24-hour recorded closed-circuit TV cameras and keypad-controlled doors.

Arrangements can be made for residents who wish to connect with their church, faith or support group. Smoking is not permitted inside the building or on the property.

Three cats live at Eden Gardens, and volunteers and family members bring dogs in for visits.

All areas are wheelchair accessible and safety handrails run through all corridors. The home is unable to support motorized scooters or motorized wheelchairs.
